On July 9, Lydia Ngonyi (NHS ‘06) passed away after a nine-month battle with lymphoma. Ngonyi, a human science major, had hoped to attend medical school after her graduation from Georgetown.

“Lydia’s enchanting spirit could lighten any mood or situation,” said former roommate Nicole Girard (NHS ‘06). “She was smart, dedicated, and passionate.”

Ngonyi is also remembered by many for her singing, a talent she loved to share with other patients in the cancer ward where she was hospitalized.

“She sang and she had a beautiful voice along with a beautiful soul,” said Kah Yee Teh (SFS ‘06), a friend of Ngonyi. “She is always on my mind.”

Matthew J. Navien (SFS ‘08) was killed while driving early in the morning of July 18 near North Andover, Mass. when a car crossed the highway’s center line and hit Navien’s vehicle.

The car’s driver, Paul D. Mscisz, has pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter. Mscisz, 29, who also sustained serious injuries in the crash, showed signs of intoxication according to the police report.

Navien, a native of Haverhill, Mass., was active in the Hoya Battalion ROTC and was an avid runner, entering several local races during his first year.

Sumer Alvarez (CAS ‘07) died July 31 in an electrical accident in Jaipur, India, where she was teaching English and technology skills to impoverished children. Alvarez was dining at the Hotel Rambagh Palace with friends when she lost her balance and fell against a frayed wire in an air conditioning unit.

A native of Torrance, California, Alvarez was active in drama at Georgetown, where she was a member of Mask and Bauble and the Culture and Performing Arts Living Community.

Alvarez had an interest in photography, working for a short time as a Voice photographer. Many also remember her for her unique habit of riding a skateboard around campus.

“Sumer’s life was just too amazing to let it pass by so easily,” said Alvarez’s friend Andy Duffy (SFS ‘07). “Everything about her made you feel more hopeful and happy about all of the horrible things that happen out there. With little to no effort, she gave profound insights into some of the hardest things in life.”

Universtiy services will host memorial ceremonies for the three students this fall.
