From runways to magazines, fall fashion is back and now the time (and temperature) has arrived for us to stash away those summer clothes and slip into that comfy sweater dress. This year’s fall fashion offers a fabulous mixture of textures and colors that draw inspiration from the old Hollywood glamour of the early twentieth century.

Those of you who thought gloves were just for winter or old ladies, think again! Many designers, including Prada, have promoted boldly-colored gloves of varying lengths. Other accessory trends include ankle boots, peep-toed heels, unique tights and ankle socks, as well as large, flashy jewelry. For a fresh take on femininity, take a look at Miu Miu’s mixture of classic oxfords and flashier, bubble-gum pink plastic heels.

Most of the fashions this season toss out the baby doll dresses and receding hemlines for something more refined. The new looks mix the strong structure of men’s clothes with softer, more feminine lines. As you see on our model Alexandra in her work-casual look, the loose, airy blouse balances out the high-waisted trouser pant.

When it comes to textures, the bolder the better. While some tartan patterns seem borderline lumberjack, don’t be afraid to try them out. Sophie rocks the red-tartan dress, so why can’t you? Also, knits are in—from knit ties for men, like the black one Chris wears, to bigger, softer knits like the yellow sweater Sophie wears in her casual look.

The beauty of fashion is that nowadays it comes in all price ranges. For example, you could splurge on a comfy cashmere sweater-dress like the one Sophie sports, or you could find a nice one at H&M like Alexandra’s on page 10. J. Crew also offers a nice selection of modestly-priced sweater dresses this season.

Remember that fashion is ultimately self-expression, so you don’t necessarily have to follow the trends of the moment. But sometimes it can be fun to try something totally out of character, like a sequined party dress and a colorfully jeweled necklace. Fashion should be fun, so enjoy mixing it up with this season’s bold new looks.

Looks sponsored by Barneys CO-OP, Cusp, Intermix, Reiss, Setchi, Urban Chic and We One You Two.
