What Rocks: Mark Dennin

September 17, 2009

Any experienced cross-country coach knows that championships are won in June, July, and August—it’s the long, arduous summer training that benefits runners most. Sophomore Mark Dennin, a young harrier on the nationally-ranked Georgetown men’s cross country team, has clearly put on his fair share of summer mileage.

Coming off of a summer where he peaked at 85 miles a week, Dennin won the James Madison University Open Invitational in record fashion this past weekend, finishing the 7,900-meter race in 24:16.8, breaking the course record previously held by Hoya teammate Levi Miller by 27 seconds.

“Coach had us go out kind of easy, under control and then keep picking it up throughout the race,” Dennin said. “Then, by the last mile or two to go, really pick it up and start being competitive.”

Clearly that strategy worked for Dennin last weekend.

“I felt really good,” he said. “A Duke guy started getting away and I just stuck with him.”

Despite the early season success, Dennin is still focusing on the season ahead.

“I hope to be part of the top 7. Hopefully, we can win Big East again and place very high at nationals,” Dennin said.

With his drive and diligence, Mark Dennin has already started to do wonders for the Hoyas’ squad as they begin their pursuit of another NCAA championship berth. Watch out for a stellar performance after his coach allows him to run freely from the gun.
