The Weekly List: The Best That Live Performance Has to Offer

September 25, 2015

With Landmark Music Festival coming next week and a number of great bands (The Fratellis, The Cribs, FIDLAR) all playing shows here in the near future, what better way to start the week than a playlist of fantastic live songs?

  1. Beer (Live) – Reel Big Fish

A big part of any live performance is the band’s banter in between songs, and few banter better than Reel Big Fish on their live version of “Beer”. Going along with their playful nature, Aaron Barrett ends his short monologue with the line, “I hate this song and I hate all of you. Just kidding, I don’t hate this song.”

  1. I Am a Rock (Live) – Simon & Garfunkel

Simon and Garfunkel’s famous New York 1967 live album showcases the best of the folk duo. “I Am a Rock” is no exception with its fantastic blend of smooth guitar and silky singing.

  1. Hang Me Up to Dry (Live) – Cold War Kids

I’ve seen Cold War Kids live twice, and both times this track has stood out. Nathan Willett’s crooning voice and a driving piano riff bring bundles of energy to the song.

  1. I’m So Afraid (Live) – Fleetwood Mac

Another classic live song from fantastic live performers, “I’m So Afraid” is known for its wailing guitar solos that change every time the song is played.

  1. Purple Haze (Live) – Jimi Hendrix

While Hendrix’s live performance of the national anthem is his most famous, Purple Haze was if anything even more erratic and exciting. The added structure of the song seems to emphasize its psychedelic aspects.

  1. The Beach (Live) – Dr. Dog

The best live song I’ve ever personally seen, “The Beach” is filled with dramatic pauses and switches in intensity that leave audience members speechless.

  1. Whisky Saga (Live) – The Fratellis

The Fratellis’ style of post-punk with a dash of country makes for great live songs, and the catchy riff of “Whisky Saga” adds even more energy.

  1. My Generation (Live) – The Who

From arguably the greatest live album ever (Live at Leeds), “My Generation” runs almost sixteen minutes long, jam-packed with Pete Townshend shredding guitar and Keith Moon’s crazy drumming.

So whether you’re heading out to these this week’s numerous great concerts or not, hopefully this playlist is a pleasant reminder of the best that live music has to offer.
