We are Georgetown and You’re Not: Hoyas hope to stop skid against St. John’s

The Georgetown men’s basketball team (13-11, 6-5 Big East) will return home to host the St. John’s Red Storm (7-17, 0-11 Big East) Monday night at the Verizon Center.

The Hoyas will look to end their longest losing streak of the season, which currently sits at three games, when they take the court. Just one week ago, Georgetown was tied for third in the conference with a record of 6-2, but their hopes of rising to the top were effectively spoiled when the team was trounced on the road by Butler.

On Saturday, the Blue and Gray were defeated by Seton Hall (17-6, 7-4 Big East), 69-61.  Sophomore forward Isaac Copeland seemed to find his way out of a recent shooting slump, as he led the way for Georgetown with 18 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore guard LJ Peak added 17 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Once again, the Hoyas showcased a different starting lineup, replacing freshman guard Kaleb Johnson with sophomore guard Tre Campbell.

For St. John’s, a three-game losing streak doesn’t sound too shabby, considering the Red Storm haven’t won a game since Dec. 13 when they took down fellow New York rival Syracuse. Chris Mullin’s young squad has struggled to find any form of consistency this season. St. John’s is led by graduate guard/forward Durand Johnson and freshman guard Frederico Mussini, who average 12.1 and 12.0 points per game, respectively. When these two teams met earlier this season, Mussini and Johnson combined for just 21 points on 6-19 shooting.

Georgetown hopes to replicate the offensive success they experienced when they traveled to New York earlier this season, when they put a season-high 93 points on the board behind a 33-point effort from senior guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera. A loss to the cellar-dwelling Red Storm would effectively end any NCAA tournament at-large hopes for the Blue and Gray.
Tip-off from the Verizon Center is set for 7:00 p.m. with the game being broadcast on Fox Sports 1.
