Elections for Advisory Neighborhood Council (ANC) 2E were held on Nov. 8. Rick Murphy won against Greg Miller  (SFS ‘14) in a contested election for Single Member District (SMD) 03. Ed Solomon, Mara Goldman (SFS ‘19) and Zac Schroepfer (MSB ‘19) ran unopposed and were voted in as commissioners. Advisory Neighborhood Councils are commissions of local residents which advise D.C. governmental agencies on issues affecting their neighborhood. ANC2E saw a significant turnover of Commissioners in this election cycle, with four of the previous ANC’s eight members stepping down.

Miller, who works in the university’s Office of Sustainability, expressed optimism about the future of the ANC despite his defeat in the election. “I set out with a goal to re-frame the dialogue about the future of our community, demonstrate that non-traditional candidates have something to offer, and hopefully get elected,” Miller wrote in an email to the Voice. “Having over 150 voters in our community support my vision for Georgetown means that I consider my candidacy a success.”

“I look forward to working with our newly-elected community leaders in the future to make sure that this vision lives on,” he added.

Ed Solomon will continue to represent SMD 01 on the ANC after running unopposed for reelection. Solomon looks forward to continuing to collaborate with the University in the upcoming term through the Georgetown Community Partnership. “I see the Georgetown Community Partnership continue to function as designed in addressing the mutual interests of both communities,” he wrote in an email to the Voice.

Solomon added that he hopes to work closely with Schroepfer and Goldman, the only two students on the ANC. “I look forward to working with the two student ANC Commissioners who represent the University,” wrote Solomon. “New people bring new ideas and new energy. This is the largest turnover I can recall since I have been on the ANC.”

Schroepfer is excited to represent the university and its students on the ANC in SMD 08. “In the upcoming ANC term, I promise the Georgetown population that I will represent, to the best of my ability, all Georgetown students to the community, as well as to the greater DC Government, and communicate and emphasize the needs and wants of the student body to these respective parties,” he wrote in an email to the Voice.

Schroepfer added that he and Goldman, commissioner for SMD 04, were expecting to work to realize their goal of promoting inclusivity in the Georgetown community. “To continue Georgetown’s progress on becoming an even greater place to live, study and prosper, we will ensure that the university, the neighbors, and the whole Georgetown community continues to work together in unity to create a community that works for everyone,” he wrote.

ANC2E will meet next on Dec. 6 at the Georgetown Visitation School.
