Ever since the release of their first record Black Joe Lewis ten years ago, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears have entertained listeners with their soulful, fun blend of blues and funk. Natives of Austin, Texas, the band has performed with some of the most influential bands to come out of the Texan modern rock scene, including Spoon and Okkervil River. True to their roots, the group will be bringing their signature music to D.C. for what is sure to be an amazing performance.

Their style is reminiscent of the raw, unapologetic soul and funk of the 70’s mixed with the garage-rock sound that helped propel rock into the 21st century. Powerful vocals and unrestrained guitar riffs are the staple of the group’s sound, and attendees are sure to fall under the spell of the group’s music. Songs such as “Global” and “Freakin’ Out” from their latest album build off of this sound in order to elevate the group’s brand of music into something all its own. Peppered throughout their music is an entertaining sense of humor,  reflections on African American and Southern cultures, and commentary on the struggles and issues of modern American life.

Fresh off of the Feb. 10 release of their latest studio album Backlash, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears are expected to play both some of their old hits such as “Bitch, I Love You” and “Get Yo Shit,” as well as newer releases such as “PTP.”

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears will perform at the 9:30 Club on Feb. 21 with opener Dams of the West, a new alternative group featuring Vampire Weekend drummer Chris Tomson.

Tickets are available here.
