DC Fashion Week Promotes Diversity and Sustainability

March 14, 2017

Nestled in between New York and Milan fashion weeks lies DC Fashion Week (DCFW), the quirky and blossoming little sister of its iconic counterparts. DCFW celebrates its location in the international and politically-minded District, and embraces its role as the spunky, eclectic, attention-grabbing younger sibling of America’s fashion scene.

In the spirit of D.C., attendees dressed in their finest pinstripe getups and poppy-colored pantsuits for the opening night show held at the Impact Hub DC on Feb. 22. Americana, diversity, sustainability, and feminism ruled the evening and set the tone for the following days of the 26th bi-annual DCFW.

The opening night featured four exhibiting designers, Bead & Reel, Maven Women, Taylor Made Designs, and Rawan Bahabri, along with a pop-up shop featuring other DCFW designers who would present their collections in the following days. Designers took advantage of the unique fashion landscape, viewing D.C.’s climate as an opportunity to cater to the fashions relevant to the District’s working men and women who want to be stylish, conscious, and economical. (Carisoprodol) Designers continued on the larger, global trend of fashion weeks internationally, using their collections and fashions to highlight critical social and political issues while catering to the every woman.
