Baseball goes 2-2 in the buildup to Easter weekend

April 2, 2018

The Georgetown baseball team (7-19, Big East) played four games in the days leading up to Easter weekend, splitting the results down the middle. They began play with a road trip to Columbus, Ohio, where they played a three-game series against the Ohio State Buckeyes (19-8, 2-1 Big 10). The Blue and Gray lost the series, but managed to pick up a win in the second game. They then faced off against Delaware State (3-22, 1-7 MEAC) on Tuesday, winning 10-5.

Georgetown was outmatched in the series opener against Ohio State, losing 13-5.  The pitching staff was the main cause of the Hoyas’ woes. Georgetown’s starting pitcher, freshman Jacob Grzebinski was replaced by freshman pitcher Owen Lamon after surrendering eight runs and only securing two outs. The Hoya offense was able to provide some production, thanks to two RBIs from freshman infielder Eddie McCabe, one RBI from sophomore first baseman Freddy Achecar III, an Ohio State passed ball, and one RBI from junior infielder Ryan Weisenberg. Despite the Hoya’s solid day at the plate, Ohio State answered them tick-for-tack and posted 13 total runs, resulting in a Georgetown 13-5 loss.

The Hoyas bounced back in the second game of the series, winning 5-1. Georgetown was propelled to victory by a stellar outing from sophomore pitcher Brent Killiam who had 11 strikeouts, 1 walk, and surrendered just 1 run in 6.2 innings on the mound. In addition to their lights-out defensive performance, the Blue and Gray scored five runs. Freshman catcher Ryan P. Davis scored the first run of the game off of a Buckeyes throwing error. The Hoyas’ other runs came from a McCabe score on a wild pitch, two RBIs from freshman outfielder James Gabor, and a Weisenberg sacrifice bunt RBI. Five runs and a stellar pitching performance from Killiam were more than enough to secure the Georgetown victory.

The final game of the series was a close fought battle, but ultimately Georgetown fell 5-4 in extra innings. Both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning when the Hoyas pushed two runs across the board. McCabe knocked in senior outfielder Austin Shirley on a fielder’s choice and Ryan M. Davis hit an RBI single scoring McCabe. Ohio State answered by scoring in the fifth inning. Georgetown pushed another run across the board in the eighth inning, this time thanks to an Achecar RBI single, taking a 3-1 lead. Ohio State was held scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, but managed to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extra innings. Georgetown responded by taking the lead in the tenth inning with another McCabe RBI, but it was not enough to hold on for the win as Ohio State scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, including a walk-off single from McGowan to win.

On Tuesday, Georgetown faced Delaware State at home. The Hoyas handily beat the Hornets, winning 10-5. Freshman pitcher Jacob Grzebinski started for Georgetown allowing only one run through six innings. Freshman outfielder Kai Nelson, junior infielder Ryan Weisenberg, and senior catcher Richie O’Reilly led the offense, each racking up two hits, a combined three RBIs, and scored a combined five runs. The Hoyas opened up scoring in the first inning, pushing three runs across the plate; and holding Delaware State scoreless. Georgetown’s offense continued producing runs throughout the game scoring four runs in the third inning, two runs in the fifth, and one in the seventh. Delaware State was held scoreless until the seventh inning when they managed to score two runs off of one hit and two Georgetown errors. The Hornets closed out their scoring in the ninth inning when they scored another two runs, but they left three men on base and were unable to tie the game, cementing their 10-5 loss.
