Women’s tennis finds a groove

April 2, 2018

Women's Tennis Action and Headshots

Since last Friday, Georgetown’s women’s tennis (3-10, 0-1 Big East) has put forth impressive performances in three separate matches, coming out with a 2-1 record. The Hoyas faced Rhode Island (0-12, 0-3 Atlantic 10) on Friday, Navy (20-5, 1-1 Patriot League) on Saturday, and Richmond (2-10, 1-1 Atlantic 10) on Wednesday, winning 5-0, losing 5-2, and winning 4-1, respectively.

The Blue and Gray dominated Rhode Island’s team, winning every finished singles match and only dropping one in doubles. There was a considerable advantage in the match, though, as Rhode Island was unable to field a third-seed doubles team or a sixth-seed singles player. Putting that advantage aside, the Hoyas played very well, with junior Risa Nakagawa, senior Sara Swift, and senior Casey Marx, the first-, second-, and fourth-seeds for the Hoyas, respectively, not dropping a set between them. In doubles, junior Cecilia Lynham and senior Drew Spinosa handled their second-seed opponent with a 6-2 victory.

Although Saturday’s match against Navy did not turn out as well for the Hoyas, there were notable performances, and the match was close throughout. In doubles, second-seeded team consisting of Spinosa and Lynham won 6-3, and the first-seeded team of Nakagawa and Marx brought their opponents to a tiebreak before losing 7-6. In singles, four of the six matches went to three sets, a rarity, before the Blue and Gray lost their second- through fifth-seeded matches. Nakagawa, at one, and Marx, at six, won their matches, with Nakagawa coming back strong from losing her first set to only lose one game between her last two sets.

The team surged back on Wednesday and beat Richmond 4-1. The Hoyas’ only loss came from a talented freshman, Emily Dunbar, at first-seed singles. In doubles, Nakagawa and Marx, again, handled their opponents with a 6-3 first seed victory. To get the doubles point, junior Sydney Goodson and Swift beat their opponents 6-2 for the third-seed victory.  Third-, fourth-, and sixth-seed singles matches proceeded smoothly without losing a set, and the Hoyas secured their second victory within the week.

Looking forward, the Hoyas have a over a week to prepare for their upcoming match against George Washington (7-7, 2-0 Atlantic 10), which should be exciting. That match will be held April 6 at 3 p.m. at the GW Tennis Center. For more updates and breaking news, follow @GUVoiceSports on Twitter.
