The Pope visits D.C.
As part of his first trip to America, the Pope will speak with 200 Catholic university and college presidents today. Since he arrived on Tuesday, Pope Benedict XVI met with President Bush and various Washington dignitaries, celebrated his 81st birthday and held mass at Nationals Park this morning. Prior to tonight’s discussion, at the Catholic University of America, several Georgetown papal experts speculated about what issues the Pope will address during his stay.
Brownback backs religion in politics
Senator Sam Brownback (R–Kan.) emphasized the importance of faith in public policy to “ensure that human dignity is at the center of everything” during a talk last night in Copley Formal Lounge. Following a short address, the Senator, who is best known for his evangelical religious views, talked with University President John DeGioia and answered questions from the audience.

Student groups talk diversity
A month after a Georgetown student woke up with a swastika drawn on his body, more than thirty student organizations, including the Georgetown University Student Association, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Jewish Student Association and the Corp, held a second Diversity forum last night, following up on one held last fall.
$20 million gift to Muslim center questioned
Congressman Frank Wolf (R-Va.) sent a letter last week asking Georgetown to explain a $20 million donation from a member of the Saudi royal family in 2005. Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal’s donation to the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding has been used to fund the Center’s study of Islamic civilization, Muslim-Christian understanding, intercultural and interreligious dialogue and educational programs in these fields, according to University spokesperson Julie Green Bataille.

Curtis Sittenfeld is the author of the bestselling novels Prep and Man of My Dreams. She is currently working on her third novel, American Wife. Sittenfeld, who has been writing fiction ever since she could read and write attended Groton School, a prestigious boarding school in Massachusetts. She graduated from Stanford University and received a Master of Fine Arts from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Sittenfeld will to speak at Georgetown University on February 19.
School closure list revised
Mayor Adrian Fenty (D) and Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee revised their list of D.C. public schools that will close by the end of this year last Friday. Six of the 23 schools originally slated for closure were removed from the list, and four new ones were added. Rhee revised the list after numerous protests and boycotts from activists, parents and students.

Metro slowdown
Major rehabilitation on Metro Center’s platform caused delays on the red, blue and orange Metro lines last weekend, tripping up students who attended Georgetown’s basketball games on Saturday afternoon and Monday evening at the Verizon Center. Trains travelling in both directions from the nearby Gallery Place-Chinatown Station were put on the same track, causing delays of half-an-hour or more.
