The Weekly List: Alone On Valentine’s Day

February 2, 2015

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and couples everywhere are preparing. Guys are making dinner reservations and buying flowers, gals are getting fancy new dresses, and I’m receiving angry comments for conforming to gender stereotypes. Still, not everyone will be looking forward to the holiday. Plenty of people won’t be venturing out for romantic walks or staying in for candlelit dinners on February 14th. Some might wish they had an SO to spend the day with; others might relish the fact that they don’t. Either way, here are a few songs that show what it’s like to be alone on Valentine’s Day.

Dr. Dog’s “Lonesome” and Ty Segall’s “Alone” kick things off with psychedelic guitar and wailing lyrics that bring up the struggles of being alone. “Dateless Losers” by Reel Big Fish brings more energy to the table and reminds everyone that people without dates “need lovin’ too”.

What Valentine’s Day playlist could be complete without some tales of lost love? “Kristina She Don’t Know I Exist” and “The Bakery” deliver just that, along with some pretty catchy lyrics. An explanation for these sad tales is offered by FIDLAR’s “Awkward”, which declares that, “I’m really good at makin’ you feel awkward”.

“Here Comes the Anxiety” and “Whistle for the Choir” bring the playlist to a low note. Being alone can be hard sometimes, and these songs capture that feeling well. Not to be lost in despair, “Here’s Looking at You, Kid” shows that even without love you can achieve success and happiness, while “Small Town Girl” by Good Shoes is an assurance that “everything’s okay, everything’s alright”. In the end, I think that’s an important message to remember come Valentine’s Day. Even if you’re not out on a date, you’ve still got a lot going for you and things aren’t so bad. Plus you’ve got a sweet playlist to get you through the day.
