The 2005- 2006 season brings new prospects for success with a new year. What better way to embrace that than with new uniforms? This Friday’s first game will unveil the new uniforms that have been signed by Jordan, a shift from the Nike swoosh that previously marked the clothes.
From 2002 until 2005, the Hoyas have played in white for home, black for away and sky blue for an alternate. From this it would appear that the school’s colors are white, black and light blue, with no trace of the navy and gray that are intrinsically Georgetown, tracing back to a declaration of unity after the Civil War.
“It’s great to get back to our original navy,” Yates Pro Shop Manager Jane Gilroy commented.
The uniforms have a traditional collegiate look with a retro twist. The whole team is looking back for inspiration to the glory days of Thompson Jr. and Iverson, and the uniforms are no exception. From 1994 until 1996, a geometric pattern referred to as Kente cloth detailed the border of the uniforms. Retired after 1996, the African-inspired pattern has returned in a more prominent role to glitz up the new look.
Though the official team uniforms have not yet been seen, there are replicas and cheaper versions of the look available to the public in the Yates Pro Shop. Georgetown basketball fans have analyzed them down to intricate detail on the HoyaTalk boards.
One student fan expressed disappointment with the white, horizontal presentation of the word “Hoya” on the side of the shorts. Another student recommended that the members of the forum stop worrying so much about fashion. He was content that the word “Georgetown” is visible.
Lawrence Dorsey, manager of Yates Field House, had a positive opinion of the new dress. He explained that they are functionally better, with better ventilation and absorption. He alluded to the energy buzzing around for the season, a rebirth of sorts.
“A new look, for a new team???that’s what we need” he said. The team also like the uniforms and appreciate the retro appeal, he said. “People are going to think we’re a new school,” Dorsey continued. “But we’re really old school.”
When the official uniforms make their first appearance in public, on the backs of the team this week, let’s hope that the uniforms aren’t the only thing brought back from the golden days of Georgetown basketball. With the roster and coach that we have and our boys dressed to the nines, chances are high.
