The local Advisory Neighborhood Commission voted seven to one against renewing a liquor license for a local bar, Rhino Bar and Pumphouse. The ANC also voted to continue probation of Sports Fans, another local bar.

The ANC is a nonpartisan organization that serves as the neighborhood’s official voice in advising the District government on matters that affect their particular area. The ANC’s vote will be considered by the Alcohol Board of Control in reviewing the renewal of liquor licenses.

According to ANC Commissioner Justin Wagner (SFS ‘03), the ANC vote was passed in order to ensure the safety of the students who attend local bars.

“It’s not that we’re voting to shut them down, but to improve their business standards,” Wagner said.

Wagner said overcrowding and underage drinking are the two greatest concerns regarding Rhino’s and Sports Fans.

Currently, Sports Fans is under already ANC probation after a shooting occurred outside the bar last year.

“Based on past record we are not recommending [Sports Fans’] approval,” said ANC Commissioner Justin Kopa (CAS ‘03). The result of this decision is that their procedures will be reviewed and checked in order to ensure that everything is under code.

According to Wagner, there has been a recent increase in fights at Rhino’s and several students have been arrested.

“[Rhino’s] needs to give us something in terms of their improving before they go ahead,” Kopa said.

The owner of Rhino’s was not available for comment.

Wagner said that the ANC is protesting the bars so that the establishments will come to an agreement with the ANC to reaching middle ground on overcrowding and underage drinking.

“If we hadn’t protested, the decision would have flown through the ABC.” Wagner said. “By protesting, we make them re-evaluate their business practices.”

The vote will be the first step in resolving ANC concerns regarding the two bars.

“We take an oath to uphold district laws and do what’s best for our community,” Wagner said. “I feel that what we’re doing is good for the entire community.”
