Latin-American author and Peruvian politician, Mario Vargas Llosa, will join the Spanish and Portuguese Department as the first Ibero-American Literature and Culture Chair.
Though the details of his appointment have not yet been finalized, Llosa will teach two advanced literature courses, one graduate and one undergraduate, beginning in the fall of 2002.
The Chair has been endowed with a gift of $2 million from Georgetown parents and alumni.
Llosa taught at Georgetown both in the spring of 1994 and the fall of 1999, according to Chair of the Spanish and Portuguese Department, Thomas Walsh.
According to Serafina Hager, Special Assistant to the Provost for International Initiatives, the chair was established with an emphasis on Ibero-America. Hager said Llosa will be expected both to teach and continue writing.
“[Llosa] has always been concerned with the intellectual life of students,” Hager said. “He has always praised our students.”
