The Senior Class Committee has moved the Senior Barbecue from its original site off campus to Copley Lawn due to the Metropolitan Police Department’s refusal to grant street closing permits from April 27 to April 30. The decision was made in preparation for the protests expected as a result of the International Monetary Fund’s meetings.
The Advisory Neighborhood Commission had approved the Senior Class Committee’s request to hold the barbecue off-campus on 36th Street between O and P Streets. The Committee decided to hold the event off-campus so they could invite members of the community that lived within a three block radius of the site.
Yesterday, Special Events Chair of the Committee Lauren Tabak (CAS ‘01) called the police department to check on the status of the needed street-closing permit. The department informed her that they would not approve any street closing permits from Friday to Monday due to protests expected in response to meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank scheduled for this weekend.
“It’ll be a success on Copley Lawn,” Tabak said. “It wasn’t what we originally envisioned, but it’ll be a success.”
