Bauder at the Bat

By the

April 25, 2002

The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Georgetown Nine that day;
The score stood 30-2 but one inning more to play.
And then, when Hokies batters hit the bases full again;
A sudden sickly silence fell upon the Hoya men.

For the batter was none other then Brad Bauder at the plate;
He had just hit for his seventh; could he make it 8 for 8?
He had shattered Big East records; one by one he watched them fall;
By the eighth inning already he’d hit three over the wall!

When he stepped into the box an eerie quiet hushed the crowd;
Although Bauder stood there silent, people knew his bat was loud.
Some just could not stand to watch, covering their face;
But they could not prevent the pitch, as Bauder launched one into space.

The ball soared above the hurler as it tore into the sky;
And when it passed the center fielder, Bauder’s hit began to fly.
It flew above the warning track and landed way beyond the wall;
Bauder raised his hand in triumph, this slam the grandest of them all.

The game was all but finished: it was the eighth and getting late;
As Hokies Copel, Williams and then Torreagas crossed the plate.
Then came Bauder trotting slowly, Hoyas trembling in his wake;
His grand salami sure to be the sour icing on their cake.

In the ninth were no heroics, no more shots bounced off the sun;
And between both teams’ batters, there was only scored one run.
Georgetown battled and while beaten they left the field proud men;
But like the fans, they were damn happy Bauder would not bat again.

As for the Hokies, what a day: five records broken in Big East;
35-4 the final score for this Virginia Baseball beast.
But the hero of the day had 18 scrawled across his hat;
His name was Bauder and opponents all beware when he’s at bat!

You can curse him, you can taunt him, try and scare him with a shout;
But when Bauder, mighty Bauder, comes to bat he won’t strike out!
