Esherick’s Island

By the

Now sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a Georgetown team …
They’re struggling through their ups and downs to try to reach
a dream.
Our season started out OK as Georgetown won eight straight,
Although the teams the Hoyas played were really not that great.
Then like the fans do every year, they said, “We’re going all the way!”
When our biggest win was Latvia, with 20 games to play, 20
games to play …

The Hoyas took on UVA in the team’s first season test,
But even though we came out strong, we didn’t play our best.
When the Cavs went up by 14 points it looked like we were done,
But then our team came storming back, and took the lead by one.
With team hopes high and defense strong, it seemed we’d turned
the tide,
But then we started shooting threes, we should have passed inside!
We quickly picked up several fouls, which gave away the game.
This might be a new season now, but things remain the same, but
things remain the same …

The Hoyas then came back to school, still holding heads up high,
And quickly got a W at home vs. VMI.
Then it was time to go play Duke, biggest game of the year.
And though we’d lost to UVA, the Hoyas had no fear.
Our team was quick, our game was strong, we had the lead
at break.
But while we’d built the base, there was no icing on the cake, no
icing on the cake …
Their team was tough, their fans were loud, and they were No. 1,
But G’town could have won this game, and didn’t get it done.
The Dookies knew they had us when they started raining threes,
When Hoyas started fouling out, they had us on our knees.
Once again at Georgetown, we had lost but fans were thrilled.
“Duke only won by seven, man, I thought that we’d get killed! I
thought that we’d get killed!”

Our next game was West Virginia, and it seemed like more dismay.
But Bethel’s three helped force OT, and G-town won the day.
While Hoya fans were happy, and the game’s outcome was great,
Back in the Hoya locker room, Esherick was irate.
“C’mon,” he said, “The refs are blind, Mike Sweetney’s getting
hacked.”
His words were true, and we as fans applaud him for this act.
The league gave no suspension, they would not put up a fight
And in the end it seemed quite clear, that Esherick was right. Yes, Esherick was right!

All Georgetown fans were stunned when our team lost to Seton
Hall,
But the Hoyas were about to play the worst game of them all.
This game was ours: We passed! We scored! Our team controlled
the floor!
And up 16, eight minutes left, who’d of thought we needed more?
The Red Storm, led by Hatten, slowly chipped away our lead.
He laid it up, he shot the three, he beat us with his speed.
Out of nowhere was one turnover, that was followed up by three.
Add fouls to that, offense went flat, we lost the victory, we lost the
victory …
The Hoyas, though dejected, had not given up the fight!
They redeemed themselves in their next game by vanquishing
the Knights.
It seems that blowing early leads has become a season trend,
But even though we fell behind, we beat them in the end.
Sweetney’s play down in the post helped break open the game.
And the Rutgers players sealed the deal, with shooting that was
lame, with shooting that was lame …

Finally, there was Pittsburgh, Saturday’s b-ball foe,
And the Hoyas might have won this game, but the refs all fri-
gin’ blow.
The pace was back and forth all game; we thought we’d win
the day,
But leave it up to our defense to mess up the last play.
Bowman first hit two clutch shots and the Hoyas tied the score.
And with only three seconds left, the OT was for sure.
It seemed the job was simple, guard the only guy down court,
But then came Pitt’s Hail Mary pass, which seemed a last resort.
Page got it and then dribbled, and then flailed and hit the floor.
The ref called foul, he hit the shot, and the Hoyas were no more.
Oh, the Hoyas were no more …

So now we sit at 10-6, Our team’s seen better days.
And if we do not pick it up, we’ll miss the N-C-double-As.
We still have plenty of battles left, and if we get some wins,
I’m sure that on selection day the Hoyas will get in.
Georgetown fans, please have no fear, “it all will turn out fine.”
I just heard we’ve signed Esherick through the year 2009, The
year 2009 …
