The Sports Sermon

We just don’t get what all the fuss is about! People keep bitching and moaning about coaches and athletes like they’re doing something wrong, but we just don’t see it.

Yeah, so what if LeBron James has a $50,000 Hummer that he drives to school every day? Didn’t we all? And who cares if he hit another woman’s car and drove away … we’ve all been there. It’s not like his personal behavior matters. He’s just possibly the most talented and influential basketball player since Michael Jordan!

And who gives a hoot that Arizona’s basketball team stole 80 candy bars from a hotel vending machine? It’s not like they’re the No. 1-ranked basketball team in the country and under constant media scrutiny, and that every blunder and infraction will be met with derision and a subsequent NCAA investigation! They’re just candy bars! We here at the Serm once stole a small child and kept him in our basement for three weeks. No one said anything then!

And so what if Jerry Sloan shoved a referee? So did Nick van Exel once! And shouldn’t we all be measuring our behavior by Nick van Exel’s? Thought so.

Who cares if Rich Gannon tossed five interceptions in the Super Bowl? It’s only the biggest game of the year, one that Raiders fans have waited decades for! He doesn’t have an obligation to show up and play at the highest level! He’s not MVP or anything!

And so who cares if UTEP basketball coach Billy Gillispie gets caught driving drunk? He doesn’t have to be a role model to the kids he coaches or anything, let alone to the student body of his huge party school! It’s not like drunk driving kills thousands of people a year or anything!

And who gives a crap about hockey? Well, we don’t. Never mind.
