On Feb. 2, two students were robbed less than a block from Healy Gates where a Department of Public Safety patrol car is permanently stationed. The students were approached around 5 a.m. on the 3600 block of O Street by two black men in their twenties, one of whom claimed to be a student, according to Lt. Brian Bray of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Second District. The other suspect told the students he had a gun and said “the smart thing for you to do is to give me your money,” according to Bray.

The students complied by giving the men three dollars, and the suspects fled toward Wisconsin Avenue. The incident was classified as a “robbery/fear” by MPD, because the suspects claimed they had a weapon although they did not reveal one.

This is the first robbery involving a Georgetown student this semester, Bray said, although a George Washington student was recently robbed at 34th and P Street. The suspect in that incident, Terry Lumsden, was subsequently arrested and confessed to a carjacking and five robberies in the District, including three in Georgetown. Lumsden is a lieutenant in the Aryan Nation, a white supremacist group, Bray said.

In a broadcast e-mail on Feb. 4, the Department of Public Safety reported the incident involving Georgetown students and reminded students of safety precautions. “We remind you that you should not resist in a situation like this. Again, the importance of not walking in the dark and secluded areas must be emphasized,” the e-mail read.
