Men’s Lacrosse-The No. 6 Hoyas defeated Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday 12-5. Georgetown opened a 3-0 lead in the game’s first five minutes and never looked back.
After Mt. St. Mary’s netted two goals to cut their deficit to 4-2, the Hoyas went on the offensive looking to close the door early. Senior midfielder Trevor Walker scored the final goal of the first quarter to stake the Hoyas to a 5-2 lead. Georgetown would open the second quarter by reeling off four goals behind another goal from Walker and junior midfielder Walid Hajj’s second goal of the game.
With a 9-2 lead at the start of the third quarter, Hajj tallied his third and final goal of the game. Mt. St. Mary’s would tally the game’s final three goals, but they too late as the Hoyas had the victory in hand.
Wednesday’s win comes on the heels of the Hoyas’, first loss of the season last Saturday at the hands of UMass by a score of 11-8.
UMass took a 1-0 lead only 37 seconds into the game and never relenquished it. The Minutemen ran their lead to 5-1 before Walker cut the margin to three with 7:36 remaining in the half. UMass, however, would net one more goal before the half for a 6-2 lead.
Opening the second half, the Hoyas twice cut the Minutemen’s lead to three, but UMass ratcheted it up to four by the end of the quarter. With two quick goals in 23 seconds to open the fourth quarter, the Hoyas found themselves right back in the game at 8-6, but they would get no closer. Never able to overcome the two-goal deficit, the Hoyas succumbed 11-8.
Baseball-The Hoyas lost a heartbreaker to George Mason on Wednesday by a score of 10-9. Despite coming from behind by seven runs, the Hoyas fell short of the victory.
Georgetown took the first lead of the game on junior catcher Michael Lombardi’s two-run blast in the top of the first. George Mason put a run on the board in the bottom of the inning before exploding for five runs in the third and three in the fifth to take a 9-2 lead.
In the sixth, the Hoyas struck back with four runs. First-year outfielder Timmy Jones scored on a bases-loaded balk to cut the deficit to six. Sophomore designated hitter Andrew Cleary stepped up and cranked his tenth round-tripper of the year to bring Georgetown within three at 9-6.
George Mason added another run in the bottom half of the sixth, but the Hoyas struck back in the eighth. Sophomore outfielder Billy Quinn singled home a run to start the inning and senior outfielder Robert O’Hare, pinch-hitting, doubled to cut George Mason’s lead to 10-9. Unfortunately, the Hoya bats had no pop left in the ninth as George Mason’s closer shut them down for the save and the win.
