The Metropolitan Police Department arrested a suspect for attempted robbery Tuesday at 1:45 am after he tried to enter the first story window of a Prospect street home. After fleeing the scene, the armed suspect ran through several yards before reaching his hiding place. He was finally found on Bank Street, according to Kate Perry (CAS ‘04), who lives next door to the house that was robbed.

The resident was at home at the time of the attempted entry. Upon hearing the burglar, the resident immediately called 911. The suspect then fled the scene.

MPD responded quickly with approximately 16 to 20 cop cars, a canine unit and a police helicopter. Several students who live in the area reported that the police drew a crowd of onlookers, comprised mostly of students returning from M Street bars.

Muriam Davis (CAS ‘04), who lives across the street from the burglarized home, said that the students were cheering as the police searched for the robber. She mentioned that she and her roommates attempted to play the “COPS” television theme song out their window.

According to Perry, students cheered loudly when the police led the apprehended man to a police car. Perry expressed her concern about the recent robberies, but also noted that she feels “more secure because the cops came so quickly, and because there were so many of them. They’re taking care of the situation.”

Despite the commotion in the street, some Prospect St. neighbors were concerned by the robbery. “We were all kind of nervous going to sleep last night,” Davis said. “We lock our doors when we come home, even during the day now.” MPD was contacted but did not comment.
