Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe (MSFS ‘95) made his annual visit to Georgetown this week during a three-day stay in Washington D.C. During his stay, he met with University President John J. DeGioia and several members of Georgetown’s Spanish community.

“He loves to come back to see how the Spanish students at Georgetown are doing,” said Florentino Sotomayor, information counselor of the Spanish Embassy. According to Sotomayor, the prince returns to Georgetown every October.

Over breakfast in Riggs Library Monday morning, the prince greeted guests in English and Spanish. In his opening remarks, Prince Felipe said that he was grateful to be back at his alma mater.

He then moved around the room and shook hands with nearly all the guests, speaking informally with many, including several Georgetown students.

“He’s a big deal in Spain, so this is very exciting,” said Araceli Jimenez (MSFS ‘04).

The Spanish Student Association awarded Prince Felipe the title of Honorary President of their association. In addition to the designation, the prince received a plaque and a Georgetown sweatshirt from the organization. “He’s a very positive figure. He has a very positive reputation in the eyes of most people in Spain,” said former President of the Spanish Student Association, Helle Jeppson (SFS ‘03).

Another member of the Spanish Student Association equated the prince’s notoriety with that of a Kennedy in America.
