Da Scoop: Women’s soccer ends season with a win

Women’s Field Hockey (5-12-0)

The Georgetown field hockey team suffered two losses this past week to Temple and Appalachian State. The team failed to hold on to a 2-0 lead against the Mountaineers, losing 5-2 on Friday. On Sunday the Hoyas dropped a 3-1 decision to Temple.

Against Appalachian State, the Hoyas scored two goals to take the lead early against the Mountaineers on Kehoe Field. Sophomore Jessica Quinn nailed the first goal in the first two minutes of the match off the rebound of first-year Dionna Jordan’s shot. Jordan then added to the Hoyas score two minutes later with an assist from Quinn. From there on, it was all Appalachian State as they scored five unanswered goals.

The Hoyas fell 3-1 to the Temple University Owls on Sunday at Kehoe Field. Quinn scored the only goal for the Hoyas in the fifth minute. Quinn leads all Hoyas with 27 points on the season. Temple senior Haley Dervinis evened the score in the 15th minute with a penalty stroke goal. Temple sealed the match with two goals in the second half. In the 41st minute Temple junior Monica Jiad netted a goal to add to the Owls’ lead. Senior Rachel Barber sealed the game in the 59th minute.

The Hoyas close out the season on Nov. 1 against Radford at Kehoe Field at 1 p.m.

Women’s Soccer (6-12-1, 0-6 Big East)

The Hoyas dropped two in a row this weekend, losing 3-2 to Seton Hall on Friday in South Orange, N.J. and again losing to Rutgers 2-1 on Sunday in Piscataway, N.J. But Georgetown turned it around on Wednesday, and finished their season with a 5-1 rout of American University Wednesday at North Kehoe Field.

Friday against Seton Hall the Hoyas held off the Pirates only to lose in overtime off a goal from Seton Hall first-year Rita Massot in the 95th minute.

The Hoyas took Rutgers to double overtime only to lose in the first minute of the second overtime.

At home on Wednesday against American University, senior Jessica Beers-Altman led the Hoyas to a 5-2 victory, scoring two goals in her final game for the Hoyas. She finished her college career one goal shy of the Georgetown record of 26.

Women’s Volleyball (5-15-0)

The women’s volleyball team suffered a disappointing 3-0 Big East loss to Villanova on Saturday at Villanova, Pa. The Wildcats beat the Hoyas 30-26, 30-24 and 30-26.

Georgetown came close in the first game but the Wildcats closed game one with an ace and a kill. Villanova lead 10-8 early in the second game but the Hoyas came back to tie the score at 14-all. But three kills put Villanova up 20-16, and the Wildcats closed the game, 24-18.

The third game saw Georgetown leading 26-25, but an attack error and an ace closed the game for the Wildcats.

Georgetown takes on the Providence Friars in Providence, R.I. on Nov. 1.

Men’s Soccer (7-8-2, 3-6-0 Big East)

The men’s soccer team had an up-and-down week, losing to Seton Hall 3-1 in South Orange, N.J. on Saturday, but defeating Navy at Annapolis 3-0 on Saturday.

The Pirates struck in the 15th minute and again in the 42nd minute to lead 2-0 at the half. The Hoyas showed some signs of life in the 50th minute with a goal to cut the lead to one. Seton Hall finished off the game with the score in the 70th minute.

Georgetown bounced back on Tuesday against Navy ,posting a 3-0 shutout. Sophomore forward Kemmons Feldman started the scoring in the 22nd minute followed by a score in the 37th minute by junior midfield Ellery Bledsoe. First-year forward Ricky Schramm closed out the match with his eighth goal of the season. Schramm now leads all Hoyas with 17 points and eight goals.

The Hoyas take on the Connecticut Huskies on Nov. 1 at North Kehoe Field at 1 p.m. The game will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hoyas soccer.
