Odd bedfellows unite, again

Take Back the Night and the College Republicans might seem like unlikely partners, but these two campus groups are working together on the annual Take Back the Night rally this year. The College Republicans intend to co-sponsor the event by donating money and providing personnel and advertising resources. The broad impact of sexual assault has finally registered among students, and campus groups are reacting with unexpected eagerness and tact.

Both University and federal judicial systems focus on prosecuting individuals for sexualt assault, but the problem is not as easily isolated as the laws assume. It’s a community issue-not only does it affect every member of our community, but its roots lie deep within society. Recent action taken by student groups shows that Georgetown students understand this complexity and are eager to take community action.

Earlier this year, “R U Ready?” explored the effects of sexual assault on survivors as well as on their friends and colleagues by featuring a panel of students affected by sexual assault. Follow-up forums are already in the works. With involvement ranging from AFIRMS to the Knights of Columbus to the FRIENDS initiative, R U Ready? was the first in a string of events connecting diverse members of the student body over the important issue of sexual assault. Additionally, be.georgetown.edu provides a much-needed resource for the mental and bodily health, and the Women’s Center has added a number of new and improved programs to their roster this year.

Most recently, stall doors in women’s restrooms have featured stickers advertising a student-organized support group for survivors of sexual assault. As a male answer to the issue, the Knights of Columbus are helping to start a discussion group with the goal of providing Georgetown’s men with a forum where they can be comfortable exploring the impact and intricacies of sexual assault. Such tasteful and meaningful student initiative is an integral aspect of the battle against sexual assault.

Sexual assault won’t end as a result of recent action taken by students. However, these new events that join diverse members of our community will help create a safer, more supportive Georgetown.
