Georgetown University honored three professors for their excellence in undergraduate education at the Fall Faculty Convocation on Nov. 11. Jane McAuliffe, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, presented Paul Betz, professor of English, John Brough, professor of Philosophy, and Steven Sabat, professor of Psychology with the College Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

“These professors represent what it is we educators love about our vocation and what we strive to emulate. They are among Georgetown’s finest faculty,”said McAuliffe.

Each year Georgetown College selects three members to receive the award. College departments nominate the candidates and a faculty committee considers all of the departmental nominations and makes the final selection. This year the committee was chaired by Professor Olga Meerson of the Department of Slavic Languages.

“Receiving this award has been very good for my morale,” said Betz, who has been a professor at Georgetown since 1965. Brough joined the faculty in 1966.

Sabat has taught at Georgetown since 1975. “To be a recipient of the Dean’s award this year is something that will occupy a special place in my heart for the rest of my days,” said Sabat.

Students praised the honored professors. “He’s Indiana Jones and Santa Clause in the same man,” said Brody Parent (CAS ‘07) of Betz.
