Prominent Georgetown Alum Manuel Miranda (SFS ‘82) is caught at the center of a Capital Hill controversy over the improper circulation of Democrats’ memos. Sergant-at-arms William Pickle is investigating how correspondence between Democratic Judiciary Committee members was leaked to the press.

A senior staffer for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), Miranda told the New York Times that a staff member who had access to the memos due to a technical flaw passed them to him. “Those documents that I did read were, in my view, not obtained in any way that was improper, unlawful or unethical,” Miranda told the Times. Miranda could not be reached for comment.

Miranda has often called for Georgetown to return to its Catholic roots. After leaving Georgetown, he became the President of the Cardinal Newman Society, an organization dedicated to encouraging Catholic schools to honor their identities.

Miranda has been a frequent contributor to both The Hoya and The Georgetown Academy, other campus newspapers. He attends Philodemic Society events according to Martin A. Skold (SFS ‘05), Vice President of the Philodemic society. “We should probably not be commenting on the political involvement of their members,” he said.
