Sports Sermon

February 5, 2004

OK, so first things first, and then the serm’ promises it won’t gloat anymore. The Patriots are the most exciting clutch team since the Bulls of the late ‘90s. We’re convinced Brady to Vinatieri is such a combo that at this point we’d take those guys against any other two athletes in any sport, Michael Jordan commercial style. Pair them up against Tiger and Phil in golf. Vinatieri might shank some on earlier holes, but when they get to the 18th you know he’s going to hit the ball right down the fairway.

Unfortunately a team that hasn’t been quite as clutch so far are the Hoyas. Upon reflection last week, the serm’ came to the realization that we may be the THIRD best basketball team in the DC metro area. Scariest of all, fellow former national champion Maryland is down with us.

That’s right folks, under everyone’s radar GW has built themself into a legit program under firecracker coach Karl Hobbes. Of DC power teams; GU, Maryland, and GW, only the Colonials beat West Virginia this year. And last Wednesday they got their program defining win in a trouncing of Atlantic-10 power Xavier.

We’ve always wondered why they didn’t play a DC basketball Cup, with incredible college hoops tradition. It could use a round-robin like Philadelphia’s shoot-out, or use the single elimination format of the Boston hockey Beanpot tournament. The more we’ve seen of this season, the serm’ thinks the biggest roadblock would be the pride of reeling GU and Maryland programs not up to the surging Colonials. If there is any question of whether that will continue, Karl Hobbes is serving up youth with his victories. And that’s dangerous for opposing coaches and teams.
