The Sports Sermon

April 29, 2004

Bill Simmons, as always, has a point. New York sports fans are hard to please, case in point the current dramatics going on with the Yankees. With A-Rod struggling, and Derek Jeter in the midst of a record 0 for 28 slump, this summer’s biggest sensation is turning into an early embarrassment.

But hold up Red Sox nation (Simmons included) the Serm is confident the Yanks will turn it around and end up on top in September.

Jorge Posada’s game has reached a new level this season while Jason Giambi and Gary Sheffield have solidified their spots among Victor Conte’s BALCO allstars. There hasn’t been a team this good since Mr. Burns gathered up the best players in the game to play for the Springfield Powerplant. Overall, there isn’t too much for Yankee fans to be frustrated about; they have won a World Series since the First World War afterall.

If anybody has reason to be frustrated this week its probably Mike Williams, the standout Wide Receiver from Southern Cal.

After Maurice Claurett successfully appealed the NFL to allow players less than three years removed from high school to enter the draft, the Ohio State running back entered himself. Clarrett infamously got in trouble wih the law after filing a flase police report regarding items stolen from his car. Facing questions about his grades and expulsion, he left school and shifted his sights toward the NFL. Williams, unlike Clarett, is said to be a standout individual. He also decided to follow suit by signing with an agent and declaring himself eligible. After the court decision was overturned, both players found themselves unable to play in the NFL and facing nearly impossible roads back to the collegiate game.

It’s like sitting at home studying when your drunk buddy comes over and gets you to go out , guaranteeing it will be a good time. You get to some house, the keg’s kicked and you’re talking to some annoying kid from class. You’re mad at your drunk friend for bringing you out, but you know it’s really your own fault. Right now Mike Williams is in that position, trying to somehow get back to school and register for classes pissed off he left school, while Clarrett enjoys his preverbial night out.
