With a sense of optimism about Georgetown students’ religious dedication and diversity, Fr. Timothy Godfrey, S.J. stepped into the role of Georgetown’s Director of Campus Ministry in July.

Godfrey’s arrival fills the position left vacant after Fr. Philip Boroughs’ S.J. recent promotion to the new position of Vice President for Mission and Ministry.

As Director of Campus Ministry Godfrey will be responsible for all of Georgetown’s religious programs, retreats and services

One month fresh from his former parish in Oakland, Calif., Godfrey answered questions in a thoughful but quiet manner. He explained his thoughts about Georgetown very deliberately, careful not to be at all negative about his new home.

He said he wants to create an inclusively religious community at Georgetown and explained that he was drawn to Georgetown because of its diverse group of students and faculty.

“I think that what appealed to me most was the oppportunity to build bridges and found a community of faith and dialogue,” he said.

Asked about his new mission, to inspire a sense of religious belief in young people, Godfrey’s answer came from his own experiences.

“I think that there really is a deep desire for spirituality. My experience is that young people really want to give themselves in a generous way,” he said.
