The Sports Sermon

September 2, 2004

It’s definitely frustrating that the only winners Madison Square Garden will be hosting this year is probably the Bush/Cheney ticket. Karl Rove as General Manager of the Knicks would easily be an upgrade over the incompetent Isiah Thomas who offered up the following explanation of his recent two-year, $7 million-dollar signing of re-re-recovering alcoholic Vin Baker: “Vin gave us a solid presence off the bench at the end of last season and in the playoffs. With a fresh start at training camp with the team we know he’ll be an even more productive force.”

This is the same Vin Baker that has corrupted every other team he has ever played for, and has taken countless years off the life of anyone who has ever had any stake in his career. If Isiah Thomas as a General Manager could be a stock on the market, your brokers at the Serm would definitely advise to sell that investment short. Using your newfound millions to pull a Ricky Williams is up to you.

Karl Rove, as far as we here at the Serm know, hasn’t lost a single contest dating back to nursery school; Dave Checketts, CEO of Madison Square Garden-owner of the Rangers and Knicks-needs to tie him up in a closet while they’re on one of those “Garden Tours.” I would recommend the Rangers similarly follow suit and outsource their management to Bush’s handlers, but their ridiculous spending on free agents is close enough to the President’s economic package as it as.

All in all this is just a normal week in New York. Over 100,000 protesters marched in midtown on Sunday to protest a host of issues. Riveting as it was, the Serm can assure you half the Bronx woke up with a hangover that morning, thinking it was October and they had overslept the annual Yankee’s World Series parade.
