Three hundred and fifty defective media adapters distributed by University Information Services left newly-arrived students without the Internet in their residence halls at the beginning of the semester.

UIS Director Beth Ann Bergsmark said that 180 students who attempted to sign out media adapters after Aug. 30 were forced to wait until Sept. 1 to access the University network.

The media adapters are needed in certain dormitories to connect the standard network cable used by most computers to the university network. The dormitories affected, home to approximately 2,000 students, included New South, Harbin, Village B and Village C.

Student workers at UIS tested the cables and discovered the defect on Aug. 27, according to UIS helpdesk employee Brendan McGurk (CAS ‘07). UIS removed the affected cables from circulation that day and issued new ones Sept. 1.
