Four first-year representatives were officially sworn into the Georgetown University Student Association Tuesday.
“We’re learning about the committees, different ways to get things done,” Alysia Bone (CAS ‘08), one of the new representatives, said. “Our goal is to create excitement within our class.”
Bone, along with Nicholas “Twister” Murchison (SFS ‘08), Pierce Nixon (CAS ‘08) and Keegan Gaza (SFS ‘08), were chosen by first-years Thursday during a run-off election after 16 initial candidates were culled to 8 in last Tuesday’s first round of voting. The turnout was 29 percent.
The four representatives see a lack of interest in GUSA among their class and the student body at large.
“There is a lot of cynicism that leads into apathy,” Murchison said. “The low voter turnout is a good indicator.”
The other representatives agreed with Murchison’s assessment, and said they hope to create more student interest in GUSA, especially among their own class.
“They’re very positive, and I look forward to them carrying over this enthusiasm to their work,”GUSA President Kelley Hampton (SFS ‘05) said in a written statement.
