City on a Hill: Resist defeat

By the

Well, America has made the wrong choice once again. Given the opportunity to climb out of a seemingly bottomless hole of debt, lies and nepotism, 51 percent of the electorate chose not to. George W. Bush is President for four more years and I am angry. You should be too, not only because an idiot was elected president, but also because he was elected legitimately.

It was easy to get mad after the 2000 election because it was a complete joke. Bush lost, yet somehow managed to win. Liberals were robbed and were rightfully upset. This time, however, Bush managed to win the majority of votes cast, so the only people at fault here are our fellow Americans.

So at whom should we direct our anger? Republicans in general? The two-party system? The electoral college? Actually, it doesn’t matter. What is important is that we take this anger and turn it into action.

A large part of the population-48 percent, to be exact-is unhappy with the outcome of the election. If even a fraction of these people voice their dissatisfaction, the Bush administration will be forced to contend with a nationwide movement of dissent.

Over the last four years, protests have become larger and more focused. Originally composed of a few thousand people rallying for a myriad of causes, by the time of the Republican National Convention protests counted hundreds of thousands of people contesting Bush and his policies. If anything can add momentum to these protests, it is this election.

Translate your anger into civil disobedience. Protest, sit-in, form grassroots organizations, chain yourself to the White House gates. Let your representatives know that you don’t agree with Bush and his policies. The election may be over, but that doesn’t mean people should stop caring about politics.

Although we may be stuck with Bush as president, we can still prevent the passing of ridiculous and unfair initiatives.

So protest a proposed ban on abortion. Protest the states that want to prohibit gay marriage. Protest a possible reinstatement of the draft. Protest against an administration that lies to further its skewed vision of a new world order.

Don’t let your anger at the outcome of the election fade: use it to challenge the administration that will run this country for the next four years.
