Many Georgetown students, staff and faculty were left in the dark for much of the weekend when a power outage hit several buildings on campus.
The outage struck Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. and affected Copley Hall, White-Gravenor and the Healy Gate guardhouse, according to University Director of Media Relations Laura Cavender. The street lamps on Copley Lawn also went out, enveloping the space between Lauinger Library and Red Square in darkness.
“The power first went out Friday night, then it came back on a little while later,” Adaorah Azotam (NUR ‘05), a Copley resident, said. “It went out again shortly after that. Even when the lights were on, we didn’t have Internet access or anything like that. Even after the lights returned, we didn’t get everything back until around 1 a.m. Sunday morning.”
Cavender identified the source of the problem as a faulty transformer under Copley Lawn.
Work crews have been working outside the Copley entrance to repair the transformer since this weekend. In the meantime, a temporary transformer has been installed and is maintaining full power in Copley.
