Living culturally

The American Culture and Politics Living and Learning Community that will debut in fall 2005 bears the mark of Stanford University’s integration of student and faculty life.

English and American Studies Professor Ricardo Ortiz, faculty coordinator for the LLC, said his interest in this community is strongly motivated by his own resident life experience as an undergraduate at Stanford.

“The presence of faculty members in residence life at Stanford was institutionalized,” he said. “It has always seemed strange to me that [at Georgetown] there is such an extreme division between academic life and residential life. I always felt that intellectual life was something that you carry with you everywhere.”

Ortiz, currently a faculty-member-in-residence in LXR, said he hopes to act primarily as the facilitator for student-selected activities, such as speakers, presentations, debates and visits to museums and the theatre.

Ortiz said he received only a handful of applications, since the program was finalized only one week before next year’s housing selection process began. The program has a potential capacity of forty participants.

This LLC will be one of three next year, along with Justice in Action and Culture and Performance.
