Georgetown’s College of Arts and Sciences presented awards to three professors at the annual Georgetown College Faculty Convocation held in McNeir Auditorium on Tuesday.
Dean Jane McAuliffe gave the Award for Excellence in Teaching to History Professor Carol Ann Benedict, Chemistry Professor Angel C. de Dios and English Professor Leona Fisher. Medals and cash awards were presented to each honoree while colleagues lauded recipients’ past accomplishments.
“This annual faculty convocation is a highlight of the academic year for the Georgetown College,” McAuliffe said. “It allows us to celebrate some of our most talented colleagues and to reaffirm our commitment to superb undergraduate teaching.”
“The event primarily serves as a clear reminder to all of us who are teaching in the College of what matters most,” de Dios said. “It answers the question of why, as professors, we have been spending our lives in this place. I am grateful that the College has recognized our efforts.”
Elisabeth Sperle (CAS ‘08), one of de Dios’ students, expressed appreciation of his teaching.
“He is a really charismatic teacher,” she said. “You can tell he is really enthusiastic about what he teaches.”
