The “Re-Imagining Service at Georgetown” initiative and “The Run for Rigby” project have been awarded $2,500 and $1,500 respectively to subsidize their goals for the coming year. The Students of Georgetown, Inc. chose these two groups as the winners of its second annual Re-Imagining Georgetown grant out of a pool of 15 applications. The grant was established in 2004 to improve campus life and encourage student initiatives by providing funds to carry out such ideas.
“We are excited for both projects to help transform and create a vibrant campus community,” Eric Lashner (CAS ‘05), Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Corp, said. The Corp funds the grant from their assets.
The “Re-Imagining Service Initiative” seeks to create a multi-faceted approach to infusing service into all aspects of students’ lives. By facilitating dialogues with students and faculty, the members of the winning group hope to come to a greater understanding of the Georgetown mission statement and how individuals identify with it.
“We want students to realize that service is not limited to tutoring and voluntering at soup kitchens, but is embedded in everything we do,” group member Margaret MacWhirter (SFS ‘05) said.
The members of the Run for Rigby campaign, Michael Glick (CAS ‘05) and Ben Purcell (CAS ‘05), will sponsor a five kilometer run in and around campus on April 24. The run will commemorate the death of Daniel Rigby (MSB ‘05) in last October’s townhouse fire. The group plans to honor Rigby’s memory and to raise awareness about the importance of off-campus safety.
