Coming off a week-long break after their March 19 loss to Duke, the women’s lacrosse team bounced back this Easter weekend, beating Rutgers 15-10. Rutgers hopped on the board early, scoring the first two goals of the game, and managed to hold the Hoyas scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the game. Georgetown ended the drought with a score from senior attacker Catherine Elbe, then poured on four more to take the lead with a score of 5-2.
Sophomore attacker Coco Stanwick racked up a hat trick in the rally and senior midfielder Lauryn Bernier scored her sole goal of the day in the five-goal rally. Rutgers tallied a pair of goals while Stanwick netted her fourth of the day, bringing the score to 6-4.
Georgetown finished the first half with three goals in an offensive explosion that carried over to the second half. The Hoyas scored four more goals to run their lead to 13-4 eight minutes into the half. Head coach Ricky Fried attributed this offensive tear to superb draw control.
“The offense feeds off of the defense,” Fried said. “Coming up with ground balls and reading the defense puts us in position to score.”
Rutgers attempted to hack away at their deficit with a four-goal run, but Georgetown held on thanks to the comfortable lead secured earlier in the game. Stanwick’s four-goal performance earned her a Big East Offensive Player of the Week honor, her third so far this season. Senior attacker Sarah Oliphant also had a noteworthy performance, scoring three goals and assisting on two scores.
“We started off slow but people really came into their potential and got the game rolling,” Fried said. “[In future games] we need to get it rolling earlier. “
In action on Wednesday night, the Hoyas traveled to Princeton for a night game against the Tigers. The teams have played in each of the last eight seasons, including the 2002 National Championship game. Although, the series is tied over the span, Princeton has gotten the better of the Hoyas in the team’s last three meetings.
Last night, however, was different, as the Hoyas grinded out a 13-12 overtime victory under the lights against the Tigers.
Georgetown will travel to Chapel Hill to take on UNC this Sunday, April 3, at 1:00 p.m.
