Items lost by members of the Georgetown community were available for purchase Wednesday at an auction sponsored by the Department of Public Safety. Merchandise for sale included watches, cameras, jewelry and umbrellas.
“We retain lost and found items for a specific length of time,” Associate Director of the Public Safety Department Doris Bey said. “After that we can dispose of them.”
She said that everything at the auction had been in DPS storerooms for at least 90 days, most for two or three times that long.
Approximately 100 pieces of merchandise were sold on Wednesday. Umbrellas went for a dollar, while bikes and other more expensive articles fetched prices of up to $25. Bey said that the auction was not intended to turn a profit.
According to Bey, DPS auctions off the items in the lost-and-found only after making a thorough attempt to return them to their rightful owners.
