A Georgetown professor became ?5,000 richer after being nominated for the Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year award.
McDonough School of Business Professor Pietra Rivoli’s new book, The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy, is one of six finalists for the ?30,000 grand prize.
According to the Financial Times synopsis, the book frames the debate on globalization around the travels of a T-shirt from a Texas cotton farm to a Chinese factory and beyond.
Rivoli said her book was inspired by the concerns of Georgetown students. “The book was born at Georgetown, and especially at the student protests that were occurring on the issues of labor standards and conditions in the apparel industry,” she said. “The book was in part my attempt to get to the bottom of this.”
Rivoli said she is honored not only by the nomination, but also by those who join her. “I was thrilled to be shortlisted, and especially to be in the company of the other authors who were selected,” she said. “The list included two Pulitzer Prize winners and one of the country’s leading economists, so I am humbled to say the least.”
The final winner of the award will be announced in November.
