After splitting this weekend’s games with new Big East foes Louisville and Cincinnati, the Georgetown women’s soccer team moved to 11-3-1 (4-2-1 BE) on the season.
On Friday, the Hoyas lost a tight match to Louisville (9-5-0 overall, 4-3-0 BE), allowing a 1-1 tie to slip away in the 89th minute of play on rain-soaked North Kehoe Field. Louisville sophomore Jen Avila scored as time was winding down in the second half, giving Louisville the 2-1 victory.
In part due to the sloppy field conditions, both teams were held scoreless in the first half, though Georgetown dominated key statistics. The Hoyas took four corner kicks to the Cardinals’ zero, in addition to firing 11 shots and limiting Louisville to just three. Nonetheless, Georgetown was unable to capitalize on these first-half opportunities, and Louisville responded with a goal just 1:26 into the second half of play.
Junior midfielder Chrissy Skogen netted the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 64th minute, her team-leading eighth goal of the year. Avila’s game winner came off a Cardinal corner kick and led to Georgetown’s first home loss of 2005. This defeat also marked the Hoyas’ first back-to-back losses this season.
On Sunday, the Hoyas avenged the loss with a dominating 4-0 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats (3-8-3 overall, 1-5-1 BE). This marked Georgetown’s seventh shutout of the 2005 campaign, tying a single-season team record. Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Higgins and first-year keeper Christina Rourke combined efforts to post the clean sheet against the struggling Bearcats.
The Hoyas began their onslaught 19:27 into the first half when senior forward Shara McNeill headed a sophomore defender Karen Waskewich corner kick past Cincy keeper Sherry Slye. Georgetown led 2-0 at halftime after sophomore forward Elaina Filauro’s shot deflected off a Bearcat defender, resulting in a UC own goal.
Georgetown continued its offensive tear in the second stanza. Leading the way was senior midfielder Alexandra Hardy, credited with assists on both second-half goals. A Filauro rip in the 63rd minute gave the Hoyas a comfortable 3-0 lead. Less than five minutes later, Skogen knocked in her ninth goal of the year from inside the six-yard box to seal Georgetown’s fourth Big East win of the season.
At the conclusion of the weekend, Georgetown has a total of 13 points, one point ahead of Louisville, and good enough for third in the Big East B Division. The Hoyas have four Big East matches remaining before heading into conference tournament.
This Friday the Hoyas take on Pittsburgh on North Kehoe Field at 1:00 p.m.
