Elevator renovations

October 20, 2005

Prepare for an increase in stairwell traffic as elevator service in three main campus buildings is upgraded.

Elevators in Nevils and Old North will be out of service until February 2006 and two elevators in the ICC are closed until December, when they will reopen and the two other main elevators will be closed for upgrades.

The upgrades will include “new cabins, cabinets and interiors,” according to Sonia Jacobson, a spokesperson for the Office of the Provost, although University Spokesperson Julie Green Bataille said most of the work will center on replacing machinery in the elevator shafts.

The elevator renovations are part of a larger construction effort as the University races to spend surplus funds from bonds that expire in April of next year.

According to Blue and Grey, the bonds are the excess funding from recently completed projects like the Southwest Quad and the Law Center. Today’s higher interest rates make borrowing new funds more expensive, and all of the projects underway are required maintenance.

The total projected cost of this year’s general maintenance is $35 million.
