A Georgetown student was sexually assaulted last weekend, even as the University began “Take Back the Night Week,” dedicated to ending sexual assault on campus.

In a campus-wide broadcast e-mail yesterday, the Department of Public Safety reported that the female student had been sexually assaulted at approximately 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning on the 3300 block of Prospect St.

Her assailant was described as a white male, 6’ tall and 180 lbs. He is suspected of having used predatory drugs in the assault, according to officials.

The victim called the Department of Public Safety the next evening to report the assault. Metropolitan Police took the student to Sex Crimes headquarters and the D.C. Rape Crisis Center.

A cooperative investigation by MPD and DPS is now ongoing. Any student with information about the assault is advised to call DPS at 202/687-2647.

“If predatory drugs were involved, then this was premeditated,” Vice President for Safety and Security David Morrell said. “Students need to know that this type of criminal activity exists and they need to take precautions.”

Sunday’s sexual assault put this week’s anti-abuse awareness program in perspective.

“It’s an issue that guys need to take ownership of, so that the events of last Sunday don’t happen again,” said Tom Parrillo (SFS ‘06), head of Georgetown University Men Advocating Relationship Responsibility, an organization working to stop sexual assault.

How to Stay Safe

– Never leave drinks unattended. Be aware of where your drinks are coming from.

– Keep your cell phone on and accessible at all times so friends can reach you.

– Don’t go home from a party with someone you just met.

– If you have to leave a party early, tell your friends where you’re going. Avoid walking home alone if at all possible.

– If someone’s acting suspiciously or making you uncomfortable, walk away.

– Keep an eye on your friends and ask them to do the same for you.
