Georgetown students held a memorial service commemorating the 10-year anniversary of the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin Monday night.
At the ceremony in Red Square, sponsored by the Georgetown Israel Alliance, about 50 students gathered to watch video news clips of Rabin’s life and death and listen to student reflections about the late prime minister. GIA President Greg Goldberg (CAS ‘08) and Jewish Student Association President Scott Weinstein (CAS ‘06) both spoke at the event.
“Rabin is like the embodiment of the commitment Israelis and Jews have to the peace process,” GIA board member Jonathan Aires (SFS ‘06) said.
The service also included a reading of the Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for mourning, by Jewish Students Association member Evan Caplan (SFS ‘07) and a discussion of Rabin’s legacy by Professor Yossi Shain, director of Georgetown’s Program for Jewish Civilization.
“The debate over the legacy of Rabin is continuing,” Shain said. “The very idea that a religious Jew deliberately took the life of the prime minister of the nation of Israel will be remembered for years to come.”
