Dorm diversity

Several student groups are actively developing a proposal for a diversity floor in the Southwest Quadrangle next fall.

The new floor, called D-7+ in Action, will promote diversity along the 7 dimensions of race, sexuality, socioeconomic class, gender, religion, ability and age, according to the project’s faculty proposal.

This outlook comes in response to a limited understanding of diversity, Fitzgerard Restituyo (SFS ‘07), secretary of the Residents of Color Council said.

“There is a need for a diversity floor at Georgetown because a lot of people misunderstand the term diversity, thinking it is only about black and white,” he said.

Floor programming will reach out to the greater Georgetown community.

“We hope that by participating in this floor, its members can learn to appreciate and respect diversity and apply what they learn on the floor to their everyday lives,” Restituyo said.

The proposal, created by the Georgetown University Student Association, the Residents of Color Council and Leadership and Education About Diversity, has yet to receive faculty endorsement, but Restituyo is optimistic about its approval.
