New street lamps near campus received unanimous approval Tuesday from the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in response to a request from the Georgetown University Student Safety Advisory Board.

If approved by the District of Columbia’s Department of Transportation, the new lamps will be located on 33 St. near the Wormley School, on the corner of 37 St. and Prospect St., and on Volta Place near the intersection with 35 St.

Last spring, the Advisory Board surveyed approximately 400 students about their perceptions of safety at Georgetown.

“One of the top concerns is lighting in the Georgetown area,” Safety Board member Erin Barbato (CAS ‘06) said.

Officer Ken Downey of the Metropolitan Police Department patrols the Georgetown neighborhood and believes that the new lights will be a valuable deterrent for potential criminals. “If you wanted to rob somebody, would you do it in a lighted area where you can be seen more? No,” he said.
