A broken fire hydrant let loose a torrent of water on 34th and Prospect Streets yesterday about 2 p.m., flooding the street.
According to Corey Lee, a D.C. Water and Sewer Authority worker on the scene, the problem was due to the age of the hydrant; it was not hit by a car.
WASA personnel were able to quickly cut off the water and attached a ‘reducer’ to lower the water pressure and prevent further accidents. As of 5:30 p.m., Prospect St. was still closed downhill from the hydrant with a backhoe blocking the street off from commuter traffic, but repairs were complete. No homes were flooded.
