Almost a year after the Corp sponsored a petition for its services to be included in the University meal plan, Georgetown Dining Services will allow purchases at multiple campus locations under the new Flex Dollars program.
Flex Dollars are automatically included in the 10, 14, and 24 meals per week options in the amounts of $50, $75, and $100 respectively. Students may use this balance to purchase food at Hoya Court, the conference center restaurants, and Corp coffee shops. Vital Vittles and Hoya Snaxa, the two Corp grocery stores, are not yet part of the plan.
“We are in the process of getting all of the services on the meal plan,” Ted Reilly, President and CEO of the Corp, said. “We’re still working out a contract.”
Complications have arisen with the grocery stores because the Flex Dollars can only be used for food and drinks.
These changes came after an online survey was made available to students at the end of the spring semester.
“I filled out the questionnaire at the end of the year,” CJ Chuapoco (MSB ’10) said. “I really wanted to make that contribution. These changes show that our voices really do matter.”
Though many students aren’t aware of this new feature, those who have heard about the change are pleased that they will now be able to use money from their meal plan at other locations around campus.
“During finals, I was getting two muffins a day at the library,” Stella Clingman (SFS ’10) said.
Reilly does not foresee a noticeable increase in business at Corp locations.
“I think it will help business in a sense, but there’s not a significant enough amount of money being added,” Reilly said. “More options are always better for students, and I hope that it will continue to expand.”
