With thirty seconds left on the clock, junior midfielder Meghan Bloomer sprinted by her defender and fired the ball on goal. The ball hit the top of Virginia goaltender Kendall McBrearty’s stick and landed in the bottom right corner of the net, and the Hoyas escaped with an 8-7 victory over the University of Virginia Cavaliers.
The Georgetown victory was huge coming off a tough loss last week at Syracuse, when the Hoyas were able to muster a mere 3 goals while giving up 18 to the Orange. But following a win over Virginia, the Hoyas, under Head Coach Ricky Fried, have improved their record to 13-3.
“It was all about our mentality,” Fried said. “We could have come out fragile. [The team] played great defense and executed the game plan.”
The game was knotted up at three at half time. At the beginning of the second half, the Cavaliers began shooting low and with success. ++Blair Weymouth scored four goals for the ‘Hoos to put them up two over the Hoyas.
With the Hoyas trailing and eight minutes remaining, sophomore midfielder Ashby Kaestner put one in the back of the net. Coming from the right wing and cutting left and right to beat her defender, Kaestner stuck the ball in the upper right corner of the goal.
With 2:46 left on the clock, freshman attackman Jody Kirr put home a free shot to tie the score up at seven and pave the way for the incredible Bloomer goal.
Sophomore goalie Caitlin Fornby was a force in net for the Hoyas turning in a stellar performance saving 60 percent of the shots that came at her. Kaestner’s two goals and assist helped the Hoyas on offense. With her three points, she extended her streak to at least one point in 14 straight games dating back to last year. Bloomer and Kirr added two goals each with sophomore attackman Molly Ford contributing both a goal and assist.
Next up for the Hoyas are the 10th ranked Fighting Irish from Notre Dame. When asked about what his team needs to do on Saturday to beat the Big East competitor, coach Fried replied, “It’s a pretty big rivalry, I don’t think we’ll need to get ‘em too psyched up.”
The game is set for this Saturday on the Multi-Sport Field at 12:30 p.m.
